At the AGM in November 2023, owing to the lack of support from local funding organisations, all the Trustees stood down, and as no other members came forward to replace them, a motion was carried to dissolve the SCIO. The dissolution was completed in January 2024, and the remaining assets transferred to Struan Community Council.
Struan Community Development Group (SCDG) was a community development trust. It was established in January 2018 to actively identify appropriate development projects that can improve the economic, environmental and/or social future of the area. Its aim was to identify potential sources of funding, make appropriate application to obtain such funding and as a result, initiate, establish and monitor projects to deliver sustainable buildings, infrastructure and facilities within the Struan area.
SCDG gained charitable status – as a Scottish Charitable Incorporate Organisation or SCIO – in June 2019.
The main initial project was to investigate the feasibility of establishing a Community & Visitor centre adjacent to the site of the Dun Beag broch, to include facilities for both visitors – toilets, catering, parking, retail space – and residents – recreational facilities, bar/restaurant, gym, community hall. We received funding to facilitate this from the Scottish Land Fund, the Highland Council and Struan Community Trust. The feasibility study was completed in February 2020, but with the advent of the Covid pandemic the following month, work on the project was suspended indefinitely. In 2022 it is hoped to reactivate the project and start moving it forward again, together with other improvements for the local community.
